Nickelback - Someday from guMaH4o MuLLIkoB on Vimeo.
The music video starts with a close-up of the lead vocalist Chad Kroeger who is also the face of the band, he is playing guitar and singing and this is to introduce that the song is by NIckelback. The scene then changes to a room where a woman is crying and a man is also present, the look on the guy's face and the woman crying suggests that something is wrong, the woman throws the newspaper that she is holding and that newspaper goes onto hit a glass of milk which spills. This could also implicitly connote that the white color of milk represents peace and the way it spills means that the peace will be disturbed and broken. The shot changes back from the narrative to a performance of the band as an Establishing shot shows them playing in a spacious apartment. The shot then changes back to the narrative where the woman is shown packing a suitcase as the lyrics go "Pack your suitcase" this here follows Andrew Goodwin's theory as the lyrics and visuals have a direct relationship. She then goes away and the guy follows her, but the guy's footstep doesn't leave a mark on the floor, something that implicitly hints that he is non-existent, the representation of the two people as well as the band is that of common daily life people wearing shirts and jeans. The girl then goes into her car and cries while the man follows her and pleads her to know why she is acting up, but she doesn't seem to know that he is present. she drives off and he runs following her car but in her back view mirror he cannot be seen, connoting again that he may just be a ghost and not a physically present human. The guy follows her which represents his love and concern for her, she is devastated and cries while she drives, she drives over a red light on a signal and the camera shot moves upwards showing the red signal light which shows that she has broken the law also connoting that something bad is about to happen being an enigma code. In the next shot her car gets hit by a truck and the man is devastated to see the car accident as his girlfriend was driving. While all this happens the band keeps on performing as scene changes from narrative to performance, this is to make sure that fair share is given to the band performance as well. People gather around the car accident and the woman emerges from the crowd and walks towards the man as he is crying, She finally seems to recognize his existence and the guy hugs her and they walk off. As they walk off the camera zooms into a postbox which has a newspaper posted to it which has the picture of the guy in the narrative who according to the newspaper died in a bridge accident before, this explains all the narrative as the woman was alive bu the guy was dead which is why she couldn't see him, also this is why his footstep on the milk didn't leave a mark and this is why he wasn't seen in the back view mirror of the car. The narrative is linear but more like a detective movie that explains everything at the end and everything makes sense at the end of the movie, this is a slightly different music video as compared to other genre conventional music videos of rock. For the performance part, the Band NIckelback had their fair share of screen time performing the song side by side the narrative, the vocalist was given the most screen time but that is understandable as a means of creating a star image according to Richard Dyer's theory. The main vocalist keeps eye contact and is shown in close ups, he is also wearing his Motif long wavy hairstyle and his french styled beard which also helps promote his star image among the audience and makes him the face of the band. |
